A 67-year-old South Korean woman who dedicated more than two decades to providing meals for underserved communities has saved four lives through organ donation after being declared brain-dead.
The Korea Organ Donation Agency (KODA) announced on Tuesday that Jang Song-gu (67, pictured) donated her liver, kidneys, and both corneas at Keimyung University Dongsan Hospital in Daegu on November 6. In addition to these life-saving donations, she also donated tissues, including skin, bones, and blood vessels.
Born as the eldest of four siblings in Daegu, Jang took on a caregiving role early in life, looking after her younger siblings while her parents worked. After marrying, she worked in the sewing industry while continuing her volunteer commitment, providing free meals and supporting underprivileged individuals for over 20 years.
On November 1, Jang collapsed suddenly at home and was rushed to the emergency room, where she was later declared brain dead. Her family, recalling her joy in helping others and her past positive remarks about organ donation, decided to donate her organs. “We hope this act of sharing life brings hope to those desperately waiting and helps save at least one precious life,” her family said.
“I always thought your presence was a given, wherever I went and stayed. Now that you’re gone, I miss you so much,” her husband, Jo Je-du, bid her farewell with his heartfelt words.
