South Korea has ranked 10th in the world in terms of gender equality for two consecutive years since last year.
The Ministry of Gender Equality and Family said Sunday that South Korea came 10th among 189 countries after scoring 0.063 on the “Gender Inequality Index (GII)” according to a report released by the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). A GII value of “0” indicates complete equality while “1” refers to complete inequality.
The UNDP has measured countries’ gender inequality level and released reports since 2010. This year, Switzerland ranked No. 1 on the index with the score of 0.039, followed by Denmark (0.040), the Netherlands and Sweden (0.044), and Belgium and Norway (0.048). Germany and France came in 14th and 16th, respectively. South Korea had the highest level of gender equality in Asia, trailed by Singapore in 12th place (0.067) and Japan in 22nd place (0.103).
