Picasso`s `Les Femmes d`Alger` sells for world record at New York auction

A painting by Pablo Picasso entitled "Les femmes d`Alger (Version O)” was auctioned at Christie`s in New York on Monday, selling for a record 179.4 million U.S. dollars.

Previously the most expensive art work ever sold at auction is British painter Francis Bacon`s "Three Studies of Lucian Freud," which went for 142 million dollars in 2013.

"Les femmes d`Alger” is the last part of Picasso’s 15 series inspired by a painting of a similar name by 19th-century French artist Eugene Delacroix.
