The woman in the middle raising her hand is Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati, the “queen of Dalits” who has become a political leader despite her background as an untouchable. She created controversy after receiving a “bunch of flowers” made from a big amount of paper money on Tuesday, the anniversary of the creation of her Bahujan Samaj Party. Her supporters hold the money flowers with their arms beside her. The amount has not been confirmed but Indian media say between 20,000 to 50,000 bills of 1,000 rupees each were used. If the estimate is right, the bunch will constitute 20 million to 50 million rupees (439,174 to 1,097,935 U.S. dollars).
