About 10 boys in a middle school in the eastern Seoul suburb of Hanam are alleged to have sexually assaulted girl classmates more than 10 times since late May.

The Gwangju-Hanam Office of Education said yesterday that it confirmed that 11 first-year middle school boys sexually assaulted six female classmates, mainly in a temporary changing room behind a classroom during breaks.

Groups of three to four boys sneaked into a neighboring classroom while girls were changing clothes for physical education class. The boys allegedly groped the girls, lifted their skirts or pulled down the girls’ underwear repeatedly.

A Hanam education official said, “[Some of the girls] did not take it seriously, but other girls and their parents felt humiliated and offended.”

Three of the offenders have since transferred to another school or are in the process. The other boys have been ordered to perform community service or take special education courses.

The school found out about the incidents through counseling with the girls on June 12, and reported it to the education office 10 days later.

“[The school] spent a week to get the facts from the students and parents, and was planning to report it to the education office after holding an autonomous meeting on school violations,” a school source said.
