The total number of law students for 2009 will be 2,000: 1,040 students will be assigned to schools in Seoul and its surrounding regions, including Gyeonggi, Incheon and Gangwon, and 960 students assigned to four local regions (Daejeon, Gwangju, Daegu and Busan).
The judicial education committee in charge of approving law schools held a regular meeting in Seocho-dong, Seoul Thursday to set the quota ratio of Seoul region law students to those in the rest of the country at 52:48.
But the committee set five percent of the quota (100 students) as adjustable during due diligence and school arrangement talks.
When 25 law schools open with 50 to 150 students in each school, 13 to 15 schools will be established in the Seoul region and 10 to 12 in rest of the country.
The committee is expected to conduct due diligence on 41 schools starting December 19. The quota for the four local regions will be discussed by a separate subcommittee.
After identifying the capacities and comparative advantages of each school, the committee will designate schools and set quotas, which will be submitted to the education minister.
