Goyang Lobbying Probe Yields Evidence

Posted December. 11, 2006 06:58,

It was reported yesterday that the Suwon District Public Prosecutors’ Office, which is investigating a lobbying scandal in regard to the construction of an apartment complex located around Tanhyeon Station, Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, obtained two table calendars with notes about lobbying activities of the K company (an apartment complex builder) recorded by Kim, 50, the company’s advisor.

Kim said, “We have presented these calendars to the prosecutors’ office last Saturday. The calendars have notes about to whom K company gave bribes and where and when the company did. This is a recording from January 2005 until July 2006. The ruling Uri Party member who was paid 50 million won early this year is also included in the note.”

The amount of money was recorded in accordance with groups such as lawmakers, bank officers, public servants, lawyers, and the like, and each group received more than 100 million won.

Now the prosecutors’ office is confirming the report and saying that this is important because of the precise information in it and the fact that Kim was deeply involved in the complex construction as much as Jeong, 47, president of K company.

The prosecutors’ office is also considering expanding the investigation. Kim, during questioning, said, “I wrote down the information I got from Jeong.”

The prosecutors’ office already knew the existence of these calendars but secured only a copy of some parts in August when the investigation began.

It was also reported that after receiving a traffic impact assessment report submitted by K company, relevant government offices such as Goyang City and the Goyang office of education proposed supplementary measures like additional purchase of lots and secure of sites for building schools. They didn’t suggest any measures that could stop the construction itself.

After advice from relevant organizations, Goyang City plans to send its suggestions in to the Gyeonggi Province Traffic Impact Assessment Committee during the week.
