Few Leaders Attend Roh’s Gathering

According to the business circle and the 2012 Yeosu World Expo Bidding Commission yesterday, Cheong Wa Dae invited 130 political and business leaders related to the expo to a gathering from 3:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. yesterday.

Among them, nearly 50 business figures had been invited, including chairmen from five economic organizations and CEOs from 30 main conglomerates.

However, only 20 people attended, including Lee Yoon-woo, vice chairman of the Bidding Commission and vice chairman of Samsung Electronics, Kim Ssang-su, vice chairman of LG Electronics, Cho Geon-ho, executive member of the commission and vice chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries, Lee Gu-taek, chairman of POSCO, and Heo Dong-su, chairman of GS Caltex.

An official of the Bidding Commission said over the telephone, “Lee Hee-beom, chairman of the Korea International Trade Association, was the only participant among five economic organization leaders. Other organization leaders, such as Kang Shin-ho, chairman of the Federation of Korean Industries, and Kim Yong-gu, chairman of the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business, and Lee Soo-yeong, chairman of Korea Employers Federation, didn’t participate.”

He also added, “Many CEOs from major companies were absent because of various reasons such as tight schedules.”

Interestingly, businessmen busy with company management duties found the time to attend events hosted by Cheong Wa Dae in the past. It was even considered unthinkable for businessmen to be absent from an event at Cheong Wa Dae, even in the end of administration terms.

Against this backdrop, some say, “With more than a year has left for President Roh’s term, this might be the first lame duck signal.”

An insider in the business circle said, “This has something to do with the current situation that opposition parties as well as the ruling party seem to keep distance from the president as the incumbent government and Roh lose support among the public.”

Shin Heon-cheol, vice chairman of the 2012 Yeosu World Expo Bidding Commission and President of SK, was absent since he had to participate at the memorial service of late Chey Jong-kun, the founder of SK Group, in Suwon, Gyeonggi on the same day.

The Federation of Korean Industries made an excuse, saying, “Chairman Kang Shin-ho could not attend the Cheong Wa Dae gathering because he had an appointment to participate the National Women Convention hosted by Korean National Council of Women, which was held from 1:00 p.m. at Olympic Gymnasium in Bangi-dong, Songpa-gu, Seoul.

Chairman Sohn of the Korea Chamber of Commerce and Chairman Lee of the Korea Employers Federation were absent as they had previous engagements for CJ Group and Dongyang Chemical, which the two leaders chair. Chairman Kim of the Korea Federation of Small and Medium Business could not participate as he had to visit a marine corps detachment on Yeonpyeong Island, Incheon.
