It is imprudent that a top aide to Lee Hoi-chang, presidential candidate of the Grand National Party, raised possibility of the president`s incapacitation and made chauvinist remarks. How could a person, who does not know `what to say` from `what not to say`, be in the position as chief of staff of the presidential candidate?

When Rep. Kim talked about acting Prime Minister Chang Sang on the 12th, he quoted a US intelligence agency and said, "Rumor has it that the president might become incapacitated. In such a case, the female premier should exercise the prerogative of supreme command over the military. How could a woman carry out such an important mission?"

As his remarks has caused a stir all across the nation, Rep. Kim made an apology. But the incident should not be brushed over. He may raise question over the ability of the acting prime minister, but it is irresponsible for him to link the issue to unproven health problem of the President. It is hardly believable that such dangerous remarks that could cause a national chaos were made by a top aide of the presidential nominee of the GNP, which holds the largest number of parliamentary seats.

Rep. Kim deserves criticism for his chauvinist view. If Rep. Kim`s remarks holds true, women should not ever dream of being a president or a prime minister. This is clearly a remark that shows contempt of women. We don`t have to take examples of other nations that have a number of female prime ministers and presidents to recognize that his remarks are anachronistic. Has the GNP made only a lip-service by saying that it would exert its efforts to enhance women`s status in the society?

As the GNP has taken the helm of local governments and the National Assembly, arrogant behaviors and remarks by some GNP lawmakers have become serious problems. Even worse, Lee Hoi-chang`s top aide has added fuel to the mounting criticism. Now we are wondering if the imprudent remarks made by Rep. Kim reflect Lee Hoi-chang`s intention.

Politicians` irresponsible remarks spawn another irresponsible remarks from rivals, creating a vicious circle. That triggers conflicts, tension and friction between politicians, which, in turn, makes the public turn a cold shoulder to politics. The GNP is strongly urged to make an apology and take appropriate follow-up measures.
