Japanese Lawmakers Moves for Legislation of Implementation of Collective Self-Defense Right

Posted November. 02, 2001 08:54,

10 lawmakers of Japan both from the ruling and opposition sides agreed to create a `Basic Security Law` which will allow the implementation of the collective self-defense right of Japan.

Japanese government has expressed its official opinion that Japan holds its collective self-defense right but it`s impossible to exercise it because of the Peace Constitution.

The lawmakers will demand the government to change the interpretation of the Constitution that Japan cannot exercise the collective self-defense right and also will move to legitimize it. It seems that they try to emphasize the need of the amendment of the constitution by acquiring of the collective self-defense right even before the amendment of the constitution.

Their move for the legislation seems to be stimulated by the `special law of countermeasures against terror` which opens the possibility to dispatch the Japanese troops to abroad without amending the constitution.

The collective self-defense right refers the right to counterattack enemies when Japan`s neighboring countries are under attack, considering it as an attack against Japan.
