The Ratio of Freshmen of Seoul National University from Big Cities Is Increasing

The ratio of freshmen from large income family, white collar- class, is going up. The number of female freshmen is also growing fast each year.

There are more and more freshmen coming from big cities such as Seoul; according to a report, 62.2 percent of freshmen have an experience of private tutoring.

According to the report on freshmen of Seoul National University that surveyed 3775 freshmen, 28.0 percent of freshmen`s fathers held administrative position (executive officer, high ranking public official). 24.8 percent held professional jobs (doctors, lawyers, professors), 16.5 percent held office jobs (bank, public servants), 9.7 percent held sales jobs (retail, wholesale merchants, real estate brokers), 8.5 percent were manufacturing workers, 5.3 percent were service workers and 3.5 percent were farmers and fishermen.

According to last year`s reports, 26.6 percent of freshman`s father were administrative workers, 23.2 percent were professionals; and the results shows that more and more freshmen are coming from large income high collar class. On the contrary, the ratio of freshmen whose father is a factory worker, continuously have gone down by a margin of 0.8 percent for recent five years.

The ratio of female students is growing continuously from 25.2 percent (1996) to 38.2 percent (2001); however, male students occupies 75 percent in colleges of engineering and law, female students takes more than 85 percent in colleges of nursing and art.

According to the analysis on native town, Seoul takes almost half of the total, 47.3 percent, which is higher than 45.2 percent of last year. Recently, more students are coming from Seoul. The ratio of freshmen from large cities is more than the third quarter: 76.2 percent (2000), 71.3 percent (99), and 67.8 percent (98).
