Beginning next year, the validity period of certificates for those who visit North Korea frequently, including businesspeople, is expected to be extended to three years from the present 18 months.
The Ministry of Unification said Tuesday that it has drawn up a draft bill for the revision of the South-North exchange and cooperation law and is negotiating with the Office of Legislation on the matter.
After receiving cabinet approval, the government plans to implement the revised law starting early next year, the ministry said.
According to the revised bill, the validity period for contacts with North Korean residents will be extended from the present three years to six years. In particular, the validity period for contacts with North Korean residents for the purpose of exchanges of separated family members will be expanded to five years.
The government is also planning to revise and simplify the present procedures on carrying goods between South and North Korea, which currently requires separate approval, in such a way as to issue a comprehensive approval for a fixed period and allowable items.
