Bookstores will be holding an event called “midnight bookstore” at the last Friday of every month starting from this month to mark the year of the book. Bookstores usually close around 9 p.m. but on the day of the event, they will open past midnight and by having closing hours up to the bookstores, some stores will open for 24 hours.

According to the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism and the Organizational Committee for the Year of the Book, 77 book stores across the country will participate on Friday, which is the first event of its kind. The organizing entities will receive additional applications every month and plan to increase the number of participating bookstore to more than 200 within this year.

Bookstores came up with diverse programs, full of character. Eye-catching events such as “request of manuscript at midnight,” “making people read books that I gave up reading,” “collaboration with neighborhood bakery and noodle house,” “arm wrestling between the bookstore owner and the customer” and “grilled mackerel and makgeolli party with the writer” are prepared.

Those who want to join can participate by inquiring the concerned bookstore in advance. For more information, please visit the homepage of the “year of the book” at www.book2018.org.
