Civic groups of South Korea and North Korea have announced that they agreed to hold a commemoration ceremony for the 15th anniversary of June 15 Joint Declaration in Seoul.

At a press conference in central Seoul on Friday, the “Preparation committee for 70th anniversary of national independence and 15th anniversary of June 15 Joint Declaration” issued a joint statement regarding June 15 and August 15 joint commemoration events, which was agreed with the North between Tuesday and Thursday in Shenyang, China. The committee revealed that the joint event will be held from June 14 through June 16 in Seoul. The joint statement released by the committee, however, didn’t specify the venue and schedule for the event. The committee also said that the North would release the joint statement at 11:00 a.m. on the same day but none of North Korean media covered the story.

“It would be difficult to give approval for the event based only on temporary or verbal consent without written agreement between the two Koreas,” said the Ministry of Unification. “When the committee brings specifics about the event, its political motivation can be judged. Only then, the approval or disapproval on the event could be decided.”
