Serena Williams advances to Australia Open’s semifinals in 5 years

The Williams sisters have mixed results at the Australian Open, the season’s first major tennis championship. Younger sister Serena from the U.S., world No. 1, crushed Dominika Cibulkova from Slovakia, the current No. 10, 2-1 (6-2, 6-2) in the quarterfinal game in women’s singles held at Park Tennis Court in Melbourne, Australia on Wednesday. Serena has advanced to the semifinals for the first time since winning the event’s title in 2010.

At a game held earlier, however, older sister Venus Williams, world No. 18, got disqualified after losing to Madison Keys, world No. 35, 1-2 (3-6, 6-4, 4-6), as the former suffered pain in her left thigh during the game.

In men’s singles, depending champion Stanislas Wawrinka from Switzerland, world No. 4, beat Kei Nishikori from Japan, world No. 5, who was the runner-up at last year’s U.S. Open, 3-0 (6-3, 6-4, 7-6) in the quarterfinal game, advancing to the semifinals. Wawrinka will compete with the winner of a quarterfinal game between Novak Djokovic from Serbia and Milos Raonic from Canada in his bid to advance to the final.

Lee Deok-hee from Korea, whose ranking is eighth in the junior category, is participating in men’s junior singles. Lee beat Sameer Kumar from the U.S., ranking 65th in junior, 2-1 (2-6, 6-0, 7-5) and secured a berth to the quarterfinals. Hong Seong-chan, ranking ninth in junior, also crushed Bogdan Bobrov from Russia, ranking 20 in junior, 2-0 (6-1, 6-0) in a match of the round of 16 best players.
