The women`s handball team won the bronze medal at the Guangzhou Asian Games Friday, failing to win the gold for the sixth consecutive Asiad.

This was the poorest result for a team that had won five straight Asiad titles from 1990.

Korea beat Kazakhstan, 38-26, in the third-place game after suffering a 29-28 upset loss to Japan. Korea had gone 30-5-1 against Japan.

Korea secured victory early against Kazakhstan with the halftime score being 20-11. Three players scored a combined 24 goals, while Kim Cha-yeon threw all of her five shots into the net.

The squad will resume training Dec. 2 as it aims to regain its top position at the Asian championships in Kazakhstan from Dec. 19.
