The ruling Grand National Party will reinstate 15 defectors who bolted from the party earlier this year, including 11 who won parliamentary seats in the April general elections.

The 15 are members of the Pro-Park Alliance, a group loyal to former party chief Park Geun-hye, and bolted from the party after failing to get nominations for the elections.

“We will reinstate the former party lawmakers of the 17th National Assembly who bolted after losing nominations for the general elections, regardless of their status," said party secretary-general Kwon Young-se.

Among those to return are eight independents who support Park: Kim Moo-sung, Kim Tae-hwan, Yoo Ki-june, Lee Kyeong-jae, Lee In-ki, Lee Hae-bong, Choi Gu-sik and Han Sun-kyo. Pro-Park Alliance lawmakers Park Jong-keun and Song Young-sun and independent Kang Ghil-boo will also rejoin the party.

The reinstatement will raise the number of ruling party lawmakers to 164 from 153.

Also to return are former party lawmakers Rhee Q-taek and Eom Ho-seong and former independent lawmakers Kim Myung-joo and Lee Won-bok, who failed to win seats in the elections.

“When the bolted members apply for reinstatement, after getting approval from the party’s Supreme Council, they will immediately be reinstated,” Kwon said. “For members who were not lawmakers in the 17th National Assembly, the decision will be made next week.”

On this move, the Pro-Park Alliance said it will respond after the party makes a final decision.
