Medvedev Wins Russian Presidency

On March 2, Russian President Vladimir Putin and President-elect Dmitry Medvedev greet their supporters on the stage during a concert to mark the presidential election in Moscow`s Red Square. On the same day, when the ballot counting was through 99.45 percent, the Central Election Commission of Russia announced that the candidate of the Unified Russia Party, Dmitry Medvedev, was elected with 70.23 percent of votes. Deputy Prime Minister Medvedev achieved an overwhelming victory as Putin hand-picked him as his successor.
