On January 8, President Roh said, “Many of the old members of the National Assembly are expected to be replaced by new ones in the next general election this year. I want to inspire women with courage to take their opportunity to launch into the National Assembly.”

In the New Year’s Greeting ceremony which was held at the Korean Women’s Development Institute in Seoul, President Roh said, “Politicians are easily criticized and playing the role of a politician is tough. Yet you should make good use of this last opportunity because chances are not always available.”

In addition, Roh anticipated, “As the administration becomes stabilized after this general election, replacement of lawmakers will take place less often like the U.S. and Japan.” Also he said, “In order to extend the opportunity for women to become government officials, a woman was appointed to be one of three presidential secretaries in charge of personnel so that she can take care of those who are easily neglected among women personnel,” adding, “I am considering the idea of appointing a woman to a position if both men and women can play that role with the database of women talent arranged.” Roh said, “I feel responsibility for the low level of women’s human rights and the small number of women entering politics,” adding, “The solution to the childcare problem that I promised last year will be practically extended, and I will promise to arrange employment so that more women can find jobs.”
