There is an old saying that one should not step on teacher’s shadow. Teachers used to be a figure of reverence in our society. However, educational authority is quickly dissipating and teachers are less motivated to teach.
Korea Federation of Teachers Association’s survey, timed for Teachers’ Day on May 15, illustrates the difficulties and feeling of isolation teachers have in our society. According to the poll conducted among 2,669 elementary and middle school teachers nationwide, 69.3 % said they were ‘not very happy’ (42.3%), ‘not satisfied’ (27 %), ‘unhappy overall’ (21.8 %).
In comparison with 1998 survey conducted by KFTA, this survey shows that teachers have become much less satisfied.
There are several reasons for teachers’ dissatisfaction with their teaching profession. Disrespect for teaching profession in the whole society, confusion in teaching direction due to the frequent education reform, parents’ excessive intervention, and the relatively low compensation in comparison to other professions are the main reasons.
We have to pay close attention to the critique of the current government’s various education reforms and upcoming reform plans which have deepened teachers’ pain and these are the major reasons that make teachers wanting to leave the teaching profession. Early retirement policy, teacher’s piecework system, and the 7th education reform make the future of teaching profession uncertain.
Of course, the education reform is an important task. When other parts of the society are going through changes, the teaching profession cannot be an exception. However, reform can be successful only when it is followed by the teachers’ support. The government should plan the reform which teachers can also participate without feeling isolated.
If teachers lose motivation, the quality of education becomes correspondingly lower. This affects negatively to the students. Various programs, such as the better treatment of teachers, the expansion of welfare system, effective adjustment of work, unreasonable regulations and intervention, and the continuing education, should be discussed and planed as soon as possible to motivate teachers. When teachers are in the right place, education will revive.
