An emergency alert has been posted to warn commuters of possible traffic tie-ups on Wednesday morning after a heavy snowfall and a snow warning Tuesday.

The Korea Meteorological Administration (KMA) forecast that it would be clear Wednesday across the nation after a trough of low atmospheric pressure passed through the peninsula.

However, it warned that roads are expected to turn icy due to a sharp drop in temperatures to sub-zero levels. Morning lows will be -6¡É in Seoul and Inchon,-11¡É in Taejon, and -4¡É in Chonju. The temperatures are about six degrees lower on average than those on Tuesday, according to KMA officials.

Daytime highs will be 2 to 9¡É, they added. For the time being, temperatures will remain at about the same levels seen Wednesday but the mercury is soon expected to drop to -2¡Éin Seoul, they forecast.

Expectations of more snow on Thursday, Sunday and Monday prompted KMA officials to urge the public to take proper precautions.

Meanwhile, Seoul had snowfall of 3.4cm as of 3 p.m., Tuesday, Chorwon 8.5cm, Chunchon 4.0cm, Inchon 4.4cm and Kanghwa 7.5cm. The snow aggravated constant traffic congestion that started on Sunday.

However, Taegwallyong Pass in Kangwon Province, which suffered the worst traffic gridlock due to its record snowfall, posted a mere 1.4cm of additional snow.

Areas south of Chungchong Province had 5 to 15mm of rainfall.

A storm warning has been posted for the West and South seas due to high waves of 3 to 4 meters, influenced by a strong trough of low atmospheric pressure.
