A resident saw two people slip into the roof box of a black minivan (see photo) in a residential area near Jeju International Ferry Terminal at 11:40 a.m. on Saturday. A roof box is a space for luggage with a width of one meter, a length of 2.4 meters, and a height of 0.4 meter. The resident suspected kidnapping and reported the car to Jeju police. Jeju police confirmed that the suspected car was on a car ferry heading for Wando, South Jeolla Province, and informed it to Wando police.

The detectives of Wando police started searching the ferry as soon as it arrived at the port of Wando at 2 p.m. on Saturday. When they opened the roof box of the car, they found two Chinese nationals – Mr. Wu, 52, and Mr. Lin, 31. Four holes for breathing were found in the roof box.

An investigation found that the Chinese people from Shanxi Province, China, came to Jeju Island on Thursday without a visa. They stayed in a motel in Jeju for two days and tried to smuggle themselves into the land in a roof box after meeting Mr. Cho, a 41-year-old carrier who drove the car. They promised to give nine million won (8,300 U.S. dollars), respectively, to Cho if they successfully sneak into Korea. However, a resident’s misguided reporting on kidnapping failed their “innovative” attempt. Wando police arrested the three people including Cho on Wednesday.
