A Korean research team has developed an organic chip for OLEDs or organic transistors used to make TVs and computer monitors. The latest will be used in both OLEDs and LCDs and is expected to emerge as next-generation electronics materials.
A team led by Park Su-young, a professor of materials science and engineering department at Seoul National University, said Wednesday that it developed a functional organic chip that adds liquid factor to organic semiconductors. The study was listed on the cover of the latest issue of the trade journal Advanced Functional Materials.
LCDs used for TVs and computer monitors have both liquid and solid qualities, enabling molecules to move when electricity flows in. OLED is used as a substitute for LCD thanks to brighter colors and better function, and is thus used in smartphone screens. Materials used in OLED lack liquid quality, however, making it difficult to create themselves into the necessary forms. Developing products with OLED also requires higher manufacturing costs.
