Integrity seems a more desirable virtue than flamboyance among volleyball players contending for Rookie of the Year honors.
With the V-League approaching seasons end, Lim Si-hyeong of Hyundai Capital and Ha Jun-im of Korea Expressway Corp. are the leading contenders for male and female Rookie of the Year honors. Both players were among the top five picks in last years draft.
In contrast, a survey conducted by The Dong-A Ilbo of 13 coaches and commentators Monday found that pre-season favorites for the award Kim Yo-han of LIG Insurance and Bae Yoo-na of GS Caltex have fallen short of expectations.
Volleyball journalists, the leagues game supervision committee and referees will choose the leagues top male and female rookies immediately after the regular season ends.
○ Strong foundation matters
Lims strength lies in his solid foundation in basics though he still needs work on his spikes and blocking.
Korean Air Coach Moon Yong-gwan said, He will be an outstanding player if he adds power. He already has a firm grip on defense and sets.
College star Kim, however, has struggled on offense and defense. His once powerful attack is now a thing of the past and his sets are shaky.
Korea Electric Power Corp. Coach Gong Jeong-bae said, Considering Kims shape, hed help his team if he didnt play. Surviving in a pro league requires wrenching efforts.
KBS volleyball commentator Kim Sang-woo said, Lim gives a boost to his team when needed. His calm play stands out on the court. As for Kim, he must recharge his strength and polish his technique as soon as possible.
○ Consistent playing time
While Ha is the leading female candidate for Rookie of the Year, trailing close behind is Yang Hyo-jin of Hyundai Engineering and Construction. Ha is praised for her bold attack and blocking skills rarely found in beginners. Yang is known for her score-inducing attack in taking full advantage of her height (190 cm).
Hyundai Coach Hong Seong-jin said, Ha is capable of powerful attack with her great physical strength.
KT&G Coach Park Sam-ryong said, Though Yang is not quick, she steadily appears on the court to show off her attack in every corner.
Bae has received mixed reviews for her attack and defense. Many experts forecast that her performance will improve with time once she adapts to the league, which she failed to do this season.
