Samsung Electronics announced yesterday that it has developed the industry’s first 30-nanometer (nm) flash memory device. The 64 Gigabit (Gb) flash device, which is used as a memory chip for digital cameras and cellular phones, can hold up to 80 DVD-quality movies. Manufacture of the device is scheduled for 2009. With this technical breakthrough, the semiconductor rapid growth theory arguing that the capacity of memory chips will increase two-fold every year has been proven correct for eight years since 1991.
