Koreans Win Engineering Paper Award

Pohang University of Science and Technology mechanical engineering professor Lee Jin-won (53) and Dr. Lee Sang-min (30) were the winners of the “Crosby Field Award” for the best paper presentation in 2005 from the American Society of Heating, Refrigerating and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE), according to an announcement yesterday.

Last February, the pair published an article titled, “Ventilation System Development Research Using Whirlpools” in an academic publication. The paper discussed setting up manmade whirlwinds indoors to remove pollutants, a concept which could be used in a new ventilation system.

ASHRAE, which deals with indoor environmental technology, including refrigeration and ventilation construction, is a global authority and academic organization that sets international standards in its field. It has about 50,000 active members in over 100 different countries.
