The official North Korean Central News Agency reported on October 23 that North Korea National Defense Commission Vice Chairman Yon Hyong Muk (aged 73), who worked closely with Kim Jong Il, the National Defense Commission chairman, died of chronic diseases, including pancreatic cancer and heart disease, on October 22.

Yon represented the North at South-North ministers’ talks and high-level meetings as the prime minister of the political committee from 1988 to 1992. In addition, he put “the inter-Korean basic agreements” into force in December 1991: agreements promoting reconciliation, non-aggression, exchanges and cooperation.

He sat with Kim at a lunch meeting with Unification Minister Chung Dong-young in Pyongyang in June this year.
