Rep. Shin Geh-Ryun May Lose His Assemblyman Position

The Seventh Criminal Affairs Department of the Seoul High Court of Justice (presiding judge, Noh Young-bo) turned down the appeal of Rep. Shin Geh-Ryun (district: Seongbuk-Gu Eul in Seoul) who was indicted for receiving illicit political funds (election law violations) from “Good Money,” a loan company, and sentenced to eight months in prison, two years probation, and an additional charge of 55 million won at the first trial.

According to the current election law, lawmakers cannot maintain their position when they are sentenced to penalties for crimes besides election law violations (in the case of Rep. Shin, a violation of the political fund control law). Rep. Shin will lose his position as an assemblyman if the wrongdoing is confirmed.
