A total of 2,901 students have been chosen for the Dong-A Ilbo-Samsung open scholarship that offers educational expenses to high school students nationwide who are in difficult financial situations.
Out of that total, 2,435 of them came recommended by directors, and 466 were recommended by others such as the students themselves, their family, or friends. In the latter case, they were selected through a screening process by a screening committee consist of school inspectors of municipal and provincial offices of education, school directors, and professors.
The scholarship will not be paid to students directly, but will be paid in the form of a one-year tuition disbursement to be used only for educational expenses. The total sum paid by this project is about 4.4 billion won.
The recipients of this scholarship are students who may have trouble paying for school expenses for reasons such as their parents unemployment or bankruptcy, regardless of their grades. Dong-A Ilbo and Samsung will continue the scholarship project in the future by selecting around 3,000 first and second grade high school students and supporting their school expenses every year.
The list of scholarship students recommended by school directors will be announced through the Samsung Volunteers homepage (www. Samsunglove.co.kr) on September 20, and those recommended by others will be announced around October 4.
A deputy manager, Hwang Jung-eun, of the Samsung Volunteers who managed the project said, People showed their ardent interest as revealed by the numerous nationwide inquiry calls we received while applications were being registered, and many of them had heart-rending stories to tell.
