Dong-A Ilbo Celebrates 84-Year Anniversary

The Korean economy stands at the crossroads. If outrun by the other two competitors in northeastern Asia, it will end up missing a final chance to advance into the level of the developed countries. Also, it is warned that if Korea fails to achieve one trillion dollars in GDP (Gross Domestic Product) within a couple of years, it will degenerate into “a stray child in northeastern Asia.” In this context, we propose some measures through five episodes with the aim to upgrade the competitiveness of Korea.

Twenty-one stone monuments across the border dividing Mt. Baekdu and Cheonji, which are regarded as the roots of Korean people, the secret agreement between North Korea and China, and the Gando Agreement leading Korean territory, Gando, and Tonghan, to Chinese territory 95 years ago when the Japanese colonial government ruled Koreans, still remain as deep scars of Korean people as vestiges of colonialism and national division. Territory disputes are expected to be a hot spot in relation among northeastern Asian countries. The reporting team of the Dong-A Ilbo, hitting the road to explore lost territory, will cover this story from April 2, each week.

In addition, Korean society will be thoroughly examined through a special symposium presided over by Choi Chung-ho, gust reporter of the Dong-A Ilbo, with comments from Yi Mahn-yol, chairman of the Institute of National Korean History, and Song Ho-gun, professor of Sociology at Seoul National University, through which we will try to understand Korean society, now standing at the crossroads, with perspectives combining history and sociology
