[Editorial] Roh Should Prevent His Aids from Falling Prey to Sycophancy

Now, people believe the most powerful organization in this country is the Presidential Transition Committee. In addition, those who have assisted President-elect Roh Moo-hyun for a long time, have secured their spots on the committee, expectedly upgrading its status. The long-time aids of Roh, who thoroughly comprehend what Roh cherishes in governance, will surely bring in some positive effects. At the same time, however, we could not brush off the worry that the specter of the "henchman politics" might be reincarnated.

Considering the nature of the power, it is not difficult to imagine how much power Roh`s aids could wield in governance with their close tie to Roh. Once the new administration takes office, they will occupy all the powerful posts within the administration. Therefore, regardless of their intentions, many sycophants will gather around and surround them. One of the closest aids of Roh had to serve an army of visitors on New Year`s Day, some of whom he did not know of. That is the reality for those who follow power.

Most of Roh`s aids are deemed young, fresh and reform-minded. It is doubtful, however, how far they could refrain themselves. Some say that they lack of experience in comparison with the power and authority given to them. Others doubt whether they could make balanced and wise decisions.

Above all, the attraction of power is intoxicating and fatal. Five years ago, President Kim`s close aids pronounced that they would remain neutral and settle for helping their boss without seeking any rewards. Before long, however, they fell prey to the sweet honey of power and could not distance themselves from it. Those who eye on easy fortunes are more persistent than even those in power in pursuance of manipulation and abuse of power.

To begin with, President-elect Roh should rein in his aids, and should not let them taste the fatal sweet honey of power. Furthermore, he should keep them from getting organized and "powerful" so that his decision-making procedure is not to be affected by their personal interests. Roh has promised that if someone takes a bribe, he/she should risk all he/she has. We hope he should stick to this principle, thereby preventing a human wall from being built up around him. Prevention is the best method to keep an administration from derailing.
