The Associated Press reported that at least 100 Afghan civilians in Kandahar died when a bomb dropped by the U.S. forces strayed off course during an attack on the Al Qaeda and Taliban remnant groups.

The AP and other sources reported that at least 400 people were at the scene of bombing which killed about 100-300 civilians who were participating at a wedding ceremony in Oruzgan Province, 120 km north of Kandahar.

Taieb Tawad, the Afghanistan presidential aide, said most of the casualties were women and children.

The U.S. officials explained the attack as “errant”. According to the press, the U.S. had mistaken traditional firing at a wedding for an attack.

The Afghan government and the United States forces formed a joint investigation group that was dispatched to the scene on July 2.
