It became possible to see each other while calling on the mobile phone over the Straits of Korea.

KT ICOM made an international picture roaming call possible using IMT-2000 in association with a Japanese mobile communication company, J Phone. It is the first international picture calling in the world.

The president of KT ICOM, Cho, Young-Joo and the vice president of J Phone, John Tompson were sitting at Koex in Samsung Dong, Seoul and the headquarter of J Phone in Tokyo and talk to each other over the phone saying, “Can you see me well enough?” and “I can see you well and hear you well, too.”

The IMT-2000 is an advanced type of GSM, the European mobile phone system, and anyone, who use GSM mobile phone, can send and receive sound, moving pictures, data, and so on from anywhere in the world.

The managing director of KT ICOM, Kim, Yun-Hak, said, “we will gradually spread this service in association with overseas mobile communication companies,” and predicted, “if it is commercialized next year, it will be possible to make picture roaming calls in 100 countries or more in the world.”
