The Ministry of Culture and Tourism elects, as the Cultural figure of May, the National master Bojo Chinul (1158 – 1210, photo) who established a unique Buddhist thought in Koryo era.

Chinul became a reviver of Chogae School by attempting to unite the ideas of Sunjong and Kyojong and he preached that there is no other Buddha except for the sentient beings. He practiced himself without a mentor and emphasized the equal mission not only to the nobles but also to minjung. He bereaved 15 books including `Chiksimjiksul` which describes his meditation and enlightenment.

The Ministry of Culture, with the aid of Chogaejong, will provide an exhibition (until May 31, Songkwang Temple in South Chulla), academic seminars (Songkwang Temple on May 13), writing and painting contest of teenagers (May 18), and a cultural pilgrimage of Zen experience (17-27 in May) in commemoration of his life and achievement.
