The ruling Millennium Democratic Party (MDP) finalized on Friday a draft bill on the management of public funds injected into ailing enterprises. The bill calls for, among other things, the establishment of a joint government-civil public fund management committee that will report on its performance to the National Assembly quarterly to ensure the funds are used in a fair and transparent manner.
The ruling MDP has also prepared a draft law designed to accord honor and treatment to victims of the May 18th Kwangju Democratic uprising and to establish a national May 18 cemetery for the deceased.
The party also drew up a revision to the Local Autonomy Law giving salaries to local councilors, but some critics claimed that only high-level large district council members should be paid, not lower-level small district councilors, raising the possibility of dissension among party lawmakers.
The MDP, holding a meeting of the legislation deliberation committee Friday morning, confirmed the two bills and is scheduled to refer them to the party executive council for endorsement and then to submit them to the National Assembly.
