The United Nations General Assembly adopted a resolution at its 55th session Wednesday morning (KST) supporting inter-Korean dialogue and peaceful unification.

The resolution, titled ¡°Peace, Unification and Security on the Korean Peninsula,¡± was jointly submitted by 149 out of 189 member states and approved in a unanimous vote following speeches in support of the draft resolution by the representatives of 12 member nations, including the United States, Russia, China and Singapore.

The resolution calls for, among other things, support for the inter-Korean summit and joint declaration; the faithful implementation of the joint declaration and mutual agreements; and the solicitation of the UN member states to support the process of inter-Korean dialogue, reconciliation and unification.

In the course of the UN adoption of the resolution, South Korean ambassador to the UN Sun Joun-Yung and his North Korean counterpart, Li Hyung-Chol, jointly delivered introductory remarks, thus taking a joint step in the world forum for the first time.
