The city of Seoul revealed a plan to build a mid-sized Sejong Cultural center with a 1,400-seat capacity from the first half of next year at the 3,700 pyeong site where the national meteorological office used to be in Sajik-dong, Jongno district, between now and 2004. The city will finalize the blueprint for the center within the end of this year and select the construction company. The total cost of the construction is estimated at 70 Billion Won.
The existing Sejong cultural center has one large theater with a 4,000-seat capacity and a small theater with a 450-seat capacity. Consequently a medium sized theater, which would be frequented by the general audience, has been a long overdue project of the city. The newly built second Sejong Cultural center would be utilized for staging concerts, operas, musicals and other various performing arts.
The city plans to equip high-tech sound and lighting systems in the interior of the new center. Moreover, the new center would have wider seats for the convenience of the audience and would be developed as an international cultural center.
In addition, the city of Seoul plans to renovate the current Sejong cultural center with its 20 Billion won budget.
