Korea places 4th in IMO 2000

Korea placed fourth overall at the 41st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) held at the Korea Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) in Taejon July 19-20.

The IMO 2000 Organizing Committee announced Sunday that Korea ranked 4th among 82 participating nations, with three gold and three silver medals totaling 172 points. It was Korea`s best performance since its debut at the 29th Sydney IMO in 1988.

The highest ranking Korea reached previously was 7th place in 1995 and 1999. This was also the first time for Korea to host the Olympiad.

All of the host country`s six contestants won medals in the competition. Park Young-Hwan, a senior at Kyonggi Science High School, and Lee Seung-Hyup and Choi Seo-Hyun, a sophomore and a senior, respectively, at Seoul Science High School, received gold medals.

The silver medallists were third-year student Kim Hong-Shik from Seoul Science High School, Pusan Science High School senior Sung Choong-Yup and Kyonggi Science High School sophomore Kim Hyoung-Joon.
