South Korean research team has developed technology to find possible semiconductor materials for transparent displays, as often envisioned in science fiction films, quickly and accurately only through computation.

A physical property, which can easily distinguish materials that can be used to make transparent semiconductors, has been discovered by Dr. Lim Kang-hoon at the Korea Institute of Energy Research and a research team led by Professor Yun Yong of Seoul National University, while developing technology to discern the property only through “quantum computation” with no need to perform experiments. The research results were published in the April 3 edition of “Computational Materials,” an international academic journal.

Transparent semiconductors are expected to be of wide use for a variety of devices such as a touch panel of smart devices, an ad display, light emitting diode (LED) and solar panels. Transparent semiconductors and batteries should be developed to be able to produce transparent displays.

The research team first studied what could be used as “criteria” to make materials fit for transparent semiconductors, and found out that electrical conductivity has a huge impact on the performance of semiconductors. The researchers then explored fundamental factors that influence conductivity, and discovered that a property to form impurities within a material can accurately point to the conductivity and performance level of the material as semiconductors.

The researchers found out that materials possibly used for transparent semiconductors can be discovered by the calculation of electric conductivity through the compiled data of materials’ impurities formation.
