When Psy and Chow Yun-fat meet

Various kinds of Korean food, including different kinds of kimchi, ingredients for Tteokbokki (stir-fried rice cake) and even Korea-produced zucchini, can be found in the supermarket within a luxurious residential-commercial complex for billionaires in Hong Kong, near the city`s tallest International Commerce Centre building. According to Korean-Chinese locals, as "A Man from Another Star" gained tremendous popularity, the impact has been also immense.

The 2015 Mnet Asian Music Award, the biggest music festival in Asia, was held at the Hong Kong Asia World Expo on Wednesday. The festival provided K-pop performances and an awards ceremony, which was viewed by 10,000 spectators and a 2.4 billion audience around the world. The event was broadcasted live by 16 television stations as well as online mobile channels. It was thrilling to watch Asian spectators singing along with Korean idol stars such as Big Bang and EXO.

Since its launch in 2009, the Mnet music event has become a global pop-culture event. There was a minor flaw, however. How could the award winners all say the same things for their acceptance speeches? They just thanked their company`s chairman, president, producer, fellow singers, manager, and even stylists. I wanted to personally ask the presidents of SM, YG, and JYP to stop their singers` loyalty towards their companies. The event started at 7 p.m. and finished around midnight. I was worried if the countless teenage spectators were able to return home safely.

The finale was shared by global star Psy who just released a new single and actor Chow Yun-fat, famous for many Hong Kong movies including "A Better Tomorrow." Watching Korean culture combined with Chinese culture drawing greater enthusiasm, I came to think it is time for the Korean wave to go beyond being a mere advertisement for Korea. Instead, it should aim for greater goals: fixing Asians` favoritism toward the Western culture due to the modern colonization period while leading the globalization of Asian culture beyond the Korea Peninsula. Such coexistence strategies will be a keyword for a sustainable Korean wave beyond the "A Man from Another Star" impact and the Mnet festival impact.
