The Land, Transport and Maritime Affairs Ministry said Tuesday that it will offer financial incentives to construction workers with more than five years of experience to have children.

Each of the first 1,000 applicants who plan to marry or give birth to a child will get 300,000 won (248 U.S. dollars). Promoted by the Construction Mutual Aid Association, the move is part of a government plan to support low-income households to raise employee morale and give preferential treatment to skilled construction workers.

A ministry source said, “We`ve been promoting measures to improve the welfare of construction workers, including a grant of 500,000 won (415 dollars) for their children`s education and compensation for the bereaved."

Those eligible can receive the subsidy two weeks after applying at the association`s headquarters in Seoul`s Nonhyeon district or at eight branches nationwide. The application form and other necessary documents can be downloaded from the association`s Web site (www.cwma.or.kr).
