Microsoft has signed a memorandum of understanding with U.S. real estate developer Gale International to jointly develop New Songdo City in the Incheon Free Economic Zone.

Gale International Chairman Stan Gale told the Dong-A Ilbo Friday that Microsoft is highly interested in turning Songdo into a model city of the future. He did not disclose details of the agreement, however, such as terms and conditions and the amount of Microsoft’s investment.

Gale said his company’s partners such as POSCO and United Technologies will send delegates to Microsoft headquarters in Redmond, Washington.

Microsoft will spearhead efforts to establish ubiquitous life in New Songdo City by connecting schools, business establishments and streets through information technology.

Gale also confirmed that Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates will have his biannual “Think Week” soon and that data on the new city is on his reading list. During “Think Week,” Gates reads a long list of papers and books to search for ideas.

Gale International is developing the international business section of the new city, which constitutes the core of Songdo. The project is slated for completion in 2014 at a cost of $25 billion.
