Chung Mong-joon, a fifth-term independent lawmaker from Ulsan, declared his endorsement of Lee Myung-bak on December 3 just 16 days before the presidential election. He joined the Grand National Party and will serve as standing advisor on the GNP election campaign committee.

In a press conference held in the GNP headquarters in Yeouido, Seoul yesterday, Rep. Chung said, “It is time to end the 20-year failed political experiment and open a new way for democracy in Korea to take firm root. At this critical juncture, it is irresponsible for me to be complacent and stay in the middle.”

The fifth-term lawmaker added, “What neo-conservatives are seeking is to preserve fundamental values that we all need to observe under the swirling waves of change. I will commit myself to the party whose values and aims ensure freedom, human rights and welfare of the people”

Rep. Chung met GNP candidate Lee Myung-bak in a hotel in Seoul yesterday morning to convey his endorsement of Lee and signed documents formalizing his joining of the GNP. He was reported to have said, “Thank you for giving me a warm welcome.” In response, Lee said, “Your joining the party will ensure further trust on the GNP by the people after the party takes power.”

As a standing advisor, Chung will campaign for Lee and is expected to serve a GNP Supreme Council member.
