On July 1, the ninth anniversary of the United Kingdom’s return of sovereignty of Hong Kong to China, some 10,000 Hong Kong citizens staged a demonstration near Victoria Park, downtown Hong Kong, to call for a direct election of the Chief Executive and other democratization measures. Local media reported that the demonstration was attended by about 58,000 across Hong Kong.
