NASA released a picture of Mars taken by the Hubble space telescope on October 29, a day before Mars came within 6,942km from the Earth, it’s closest approach. The picture gives a clear image of a big dust storm building in Mars’ middle and polar regions where more ice has melted than usual, because of the planet’s close proximity to the Sun. Since Mars will begin traveling away from Earth after October 30, this is the closest view we will have of Mars until 2018, when it will begin approaching Earth again.
