The government has decided to provide 150,000 tons of fertilizer aid to the North in addition to the 200,000 tons of fertilizer aid recently sent.

Accordingly, a transport ship, the “Sea Master,” is leaving Yeosu harbor in the south of Jeolla province for Nampo harbor in the south of Pyongan Province, North Korea with the first batch of 5,000 tons of fertilizer.

An official of the Ministry of Unification said on June 26, “As the North demanded additional fertilizer aid through the Red Cross on June 18, and as it asked for the aid again during the 15th minister-level talks held on June 21 to June 24, and during the Republic of Korea National Red Cross president Han Wan-sang’s visit to North Korea, we decided to assist them from a humanitarian and fraternal point of view.”

He also said, “We reported to the National Assembly`s Committee on Unification, Foreign Affairs and Trade on this issue,” and added, “The six billion won expense for buying the fertilizer and transporting it will be covered by the inter-Korean corporation fund.”
