A domestic enterprise developed an alternating current (AC) Light Emitting Diode (LED) that can be used as lighting by directly plugging it into an outlet.

Seoul Semiconductor, which produces LED products, developed the AC LED for the first time in the world and held a product preview at the hall of the Federation of Korean Industries in Yeouido, Seoul.

The existing LED is expensive because it is designed for direct current (DC) operation, which requires a switching device in order to be used on AC.

The life of the AC LED is 80,000 hours, which is longer than an incandescent light (1,000 hours), a fluorescent light (5,000 hours), and power LED (50,000 hours). The AC LED is expected to replace all three in the long term.
