An explosion on April 22 devastated Yongcheon, near Sinuiju, in North Korea. North Korea is currently suffering great loss and desperately needs swift aid; rescue work is their most urgent necessity.

Dong-A Ilbo began helping North Korea on April 24, as a national newspaper cannot be indifferent to such suffering. We are collecting relief equipment, medicine, and food, as well as donations. Donations collected by Dong-A Ilbo will be delivered to North Korea via Red Cross. To date, employees at Dong-A Ilbo have donated 50 million won.

Please extend a warm helping hand to North Korean’s in grief. Let us share in the sorrow wrought by this tragic accident. Let us join in the humanitarian work of the world that opens the channels of communication between different ideologies and systems.

In an unprecedented move, North Korea disclosed circumstances of the accident and asked for aid from other countries. Our generosity will contribute to improvement in security measures, as well as the opening of North Korea and development of South-North Korea relations.

We would like to express gratitude for participation from people of all social spheres, including politicians and civic groups. Once again, we appeal to all of our readers to cooperate in this endeavor to help North Korea, currently suffering the twofold pain of disaster and serious economic difficulty.
