The New York Times urged the U.S. to come forward with a plan to solve the North Korean nuclear crisis through economic and diplomatic measures of inducement.

This newspaper expressed its concern in an editorial on March 18, “Even if George W. Bush seems to be satisfied with letting this situation drift at least until the upcoming U.S. presidential election, such an attitude could be a fatal blow to the nation’s security.”

The editorial pointed out, “Considering the situation in which North Korea threatens its neighbors with nuclear weapons, of which development is complete, or sells them to any party, the U.S. must actively find a diplomatic solution even though it is not satisfying.”

It also urged, “The U.S. government should actively find a diplomatic chance to solve the problem,” on the assumption that “The North Korean issue cannot be easier with time on North Korea’s side.”

The New York Times also added, “All participating countries know the fact that genuine progress cannot be made unless the U.S. makes clear what North Korea can gain diplomatically and economically when it discards its nuclear program.”
