▽Utility Computing= American Express recently closed its computing center. IBM instead provides American Express with utility-like access to its vast computing resources and charges American Express for its service. It is not much different from charging water rates or electricity rates. The more you use, the more you pay.
Utility computing is a service that a large computer corporation provides to a company for its information system and charges for its service based on the amount of information the client use. Once this system is introduced, companies will only need terminals and LAN cables to transact their business matters. This will revolutionize corporate environments and bring the third revolution after the birth of computers and introduction of the internet, Business Week anticipated.
IBM is to pour 800 million dollars into the utility computing project and Sun Microsystems and Hewlett Packard are also in the competition.
